On September 11, 2026, a police officer in Guayaquil, Ecuador, was critically injured during a pursuit in the Sergio Toral cooperative. While traveling in a patrol car to pursue two individuals on a motorcycle, suspects opened fire, striking the vehicle and hitting the officer in the head.

Commander Walter Villarroel reported that the officer underwent surgery to remove a projectile from the brain. Following the shooting, authorities conducted raids and apprehended more than 11 people as they identified the two suspects on the motorcycle.
