On 17 July 2026 the Polish Sejm approved Dr Mateusz Szpytma as president of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) with a 226‑194‑4 vote, supported by the Law and Justice party, the Polish People’s Party, Confederation and some Poland 2050 members. Opposition parties, including the Civic Coalition and the Left, warned they would block the appointment in the Senate.

The Senate voted on 6 August 2026 and rejected Szpytma’s nomination, recording 38 votes in favour, 50 against and one abstention. The Civic Coalition and the Left, which control a Senate majority, led the opposition, while PiS, Confederation and PSL remained supportive. The rejection means the Sejm‑approved nomination must be restarted, with the IPN Collegium expected to propose a new candidate for Senate approval.
