In late July 2026, former Polish justice minister Adam Bodnar suggested that fugitive PiS deputy Marcin Romanowski might be concealed in an Opus Dei monastery in Serbia to evade a European Arrest Warrant. Opus Dei denied these claims. By August 10, 2026, Polish Special Services Coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak described Romanowski as being in a ‘dramatically difficult situation,’ noting that his Hungarian documents had been revoked and he was unable to use payment cards or phones while living abroad.

On that same day, the Polish National Prosecutor's Office rejected a request from defense lawyers to lift Romanowski’s temporary arrest, citing the risk of evidence tampering and his 18-month evasion of law enforcement. Defense attorney Bartosz Lewandowski called the decision predictable and announced plans to appeal.

On August 12, 2026, new information emerged suggesting Romanowski has been located in Tiraspol, the capital of the breakaway Transnistrian region in Moldova. This was revealed through a signed document registered with the District Court in Warsaw, in which Romanowski applied for a ‘safe conduct letter’ (list żelny). In the application, he provided his Tiraspol address and expressed a willingness to appear before judicial authorities, provided he can do so from a ‘position of freedom rather than under arrest.’

Romanowski remains a central figure in the investigation into irregularities within the Justice Fund, alongside former Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro. Romanowski faces 11 criminal charges, including participation in an organized criminal group.
