Recent developments in Polish television include new adaptations of Bolesław Prus’s classic novel ‘Lalka’. These include a traditional film by Maciej Kawalski and a modern Netflix series by Paweł Maślona, which is described as a fast-paced variation featuring new characters.

Additionally, the series ‘Matki Pingwinów’ (Penguin Mothers) has returned for a second season on Netflix. Following the first season’s focus on an autism diagnosis, the new season takes place eighteen months later and follows characters attempting to establish a school called ‘Biegun Szczęścia’ for neuroatypical children. The production, which previously received an Orzeł award and was recognized by The New York Times as one of the most interesting foreign series of 2024, aims to depict the realities of neurodiverse parenting and the challenges of bureaucracy and financial difficulties.

Released on October 21, the second season reached the top of Netflix’s viewership charts in Poland within one day. The new episodes follow characters Kama, Ula, Tatiana, and Jerzy as they navigate the complexities of children entering adolescence, including themes of teenage rebellion and personal crises. Lead actress Magdalena Różczka noted that the series highlights the individuality of mothers with disabilities, challenging societal expectations that they exist solely for the purpose of motherhood.
