India's ethanol-blending policy has evolved into a multifaceted debate involving energy security, environmental sustainability, and food security. While the government aims to reduce crude oil imports—which currently account for 80% of India's needs—and save an estimated Rs 1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange, the policy faces increasing scrutiny.

Environmental and agricultural concerns have intensified. The high water footprint of ethanol production, requiring roughly 3,000 liters of water per liter of ethanol, threatens groundwater levels in sugarcane-producing regions like Karnataka. Furthermore, a “food versus fuel” tension has emerged as sugarcane, rice, and maize are diverted toward fuel production. This shift has contributed to rising sugar prices, which were 13% higher in August compared to the previous year, transitioning India from a sugar exporter to an importer.

Political friction remains high following controversial remarks by BJP MP Janardan Mishra. While defending the E20 mandate as essential for self-reliance, Mishra asked critics demanding pure petrol if it would come from “your father’s house,” a comment Congress leader Jitu Patwari labeled as an expression of arrogance.

On the consumer side, opposition leaders like the Aam Aadmi Party have questioned the economic impact of the transition. Despite government assurances regarding vehicle compatibility, some consumers have reported a decrease in mileage when using E20 blends, fueling concerns about the policy's impact on the automobile market and consumer interest.
