Political tension has escalated within the municipal administration of Agrigento. Initially, Vice Mayor Giovanni Crosta faced calls for resignation from the Controcorrente movement leader Ismaele La Vardera. The dispute centered on a pending building amnesty application for a property inherited by Crosta, which critics argued created a conflict of interest while the administration processed the request.

Crosta defended his position, characterizing the situation as a “violent media campaign” and noting the amnesty request had been pending since 1985. Mayor Michele Sodano expressed support for the Vice Mayor, stating that no crimes had been alleged. Following these disputes, former regional deputy Basilio Vella called for the total dissolution of the current municipal administration, describing the state of the city as being “beyond the limits of what is bearable.”

The crisis reached a turning point when Giovanni Crosta resigned from his positions as deputy mayor and assessor. The resignation followed the Superintendency’s refusal to grant a permit for the legalization of the inherited property in the Zingarello area.

Crosta stated he was stepping down because he lacked the “necessary serenity” to continue his mandate due to intense media scrutiny, claiming he was a victim of “instrumental political speculation” aimed at disrupting local political balances. The controversy also resulted in Crosta’s expulsion from the Controcorrente movement. While Mayor Sodano defended Crosta’s professionalism and suggested the crisis was an attempt to destabilize the administration, the incident has intensified the political crisis for Sodano’s leadership.
