In Mexico, the administration faced criticism after legal advisor Luisa María Alcalde labeled journalists, media outlets, and analytical accounts as ‘enemies of the regime.’ Critics argued this move departed from previous government stances against political stigmatization.

Following these tensions, Mexican political leaders issued calls for improved democratic discourse. Senate President Higinio Martínez Miranda reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to respecting journalistic work and freedom of expression, stating that respect must prevail over threats.

As the 2027 electoral process approaches, President Claudia Sheinbaum has expanded her focus to include electoral administration and budget oversight. She challenged the National Electoral Institute (INE) regarding its request for over 40 billion pesos, characterizing the amount as excessive since 2027 is not a presidential election year. She suggested a budget closer to 37 billion pesos, based on 2024 expenditures adjusted for inflation.

Sheinbaum also demanded transparency from the INE concerning administrative decisions, such as changes to the institute’s institutional color and rules regarding the validity of unfolded ballots. Amidst these fiscal and administrative debates, the President reiterated her call for the eradication of hate speech, urging political parties to prioritize concrete proposals over aggressive campaigns and personal attacks.
