In early August 2026 the Archaeological Park of Pompeii combined new archaeological highlights with a contemporary art exhibition. On 2 August, archaeologists announced the discovery of a well‑preserved Roman four‑wheeled iron carriage near Villa Civita Giuliana, described as unique in Italy. At the same time the park opened British artist Philip Colbert’s “Pop Mythology” show, featuring more than 30 monumental lobster sculptures installed throughout the ruins.

The following day, 3 August, the park presented a scientific bronze replica of the ancient Greek sculpture Polykleitos’ Canon, unveiled by Italy’s Minister of Culture and park officials. The lobster exhibition continued, marking the first large‑scale contemporary sculpture display inside Pompeii’s ancient houses in three decades and reinforcing the park’s aim to juxtapose antiquity with modern pop culture.
