During the 2026 municipal election cycle in Port Alberni, candidates for mayor, city council, and regional district positions participated in several public forums.

An initial all-candidates meeting hosted by the citizen-led group AV Elections focused on broad local issues, including tax reduction, affordable housing, healthcare, and public safety. During this session, candidate Tom Verbrugge declined to answer questions following reports of recent harassment.

In a subsequent meeting organized by the Alberni District Secondary School student council, candidates addressed concerns specific to younger residents, such as reconciliation, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. Mayoral candidates presented differing strategies for youth retention, ranging from revitalizing lost local industries to leveraging existing resources and increasing local service availability to reduce the need for travel.
