The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is facing institutional and economic challenges following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from the national team. Under new president Pedro Proença, the FPF has sought to implement a ‘business management model’ to decrease the team’s reliance on the player, though analysts warn that existing tensions risk devaluing the federation’s brand.

Recent developments centered on Ronaldo leaving a training camp in Copenhagen 24 hours before a Nations League match against Denmark. This departure reportedly followed tensions involving coach Jorge Jesus and follows previous friction regarding Ronaldo’s dissatisfaction after being benched during a match against Norway. While Sporting de Braga president António Salvador criticized the move as ‘not the best attitude’ and suggested it may have been made in the heat of the moment, Proença has labeled the incident a ‘misunderstanding’.

Proença defended the captain, describing him as an ‘extraordinary player’ and a national icon, expressing optimism that Ronaldo will return to the squad in November. Ronaldo has indicated via social media that he spoke with Proença before leaving and has promised to reveal the ‘full truth’ regarding his motivations in due course.
