In late September 2026, organizations in Arraiolos and Fundão held conferences to discuss the future of rural territories. These events focused on social innovation and local development, including the introduction of the ‘Compromisso Rural 2035’ (Rural Commitment 2035) as a strategic roadmap for the region. Following these development discussions, intermunicipal communities moved toward managing rural fire risks. The CIM Viseu Dão Lafões approved a Sub-Regional Action Program for integrated fire management to improve prevention and coordination across 14 municipalities. Meanwhile, the CIM Alto Tâmega e Barroso initiated a public consultation for its own Sub-Regional Action Program, which includes 53 intervention projects focused on fuel management, territory preparation, and the establishment of water points and fire detection networks. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-29: Portuguese regional communities approve new rural fire management plans Portuguese intermunicipal communities are implementing new regional programs to enhance rural fire prevention and integrated management across multiple municipalities. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/portuguese-regional-communities-approve-new-rural-fire-management-plans ### 2026-09-28: Portuguese regional entities host conferences on rural development Regional entities in Portugal are holding conferences to discuss rural development strategies, including the launch of ‘Compromisso Rural 2035’ and commemorations of long-standing local development milestones. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/portuguese-regional-entities-host-conferences-on-rural-development --- Cite as: Portuguese regional rural development and management.
