The Prince Estate, in partnership with Legacy Recordings and Sony Music, has released ‘Timeless’, a posthumous album featuring ten rare and previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1977 and 2016. Remastered by sound engineer Chris James and produced by Charles F. Spicer Jr., the collection is drawn from the artist’s extensive archive, known as ‘The Vault’.

Marking ten years since the musician’s death at Paisley Park in April 2016, the release showcases his musical versatility across genres such as funk, R&B, and heavy metal-influenced guitar. Notable tracks include the 1977 funk jam ‘I Am You’, the 1981 original version of ‘Tick Tick Bang’, and the 1991 piano ballad ‘With This Tear’, which was originally written for Celine Dion’s 1992 self-titled album. Other inclusions feature the 1995 R&B track ‘Stone’, the 2007 song ‘The Guilty Ones’, the 2012 recording ‘Bestest Friend’, and a 2016 live performance of ‘How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore’.

Following the release of advance tracks, some listeners raised concerns regarding the potential use of artificial intelligence in the production of the song ‘Calabama’. The estate addressed these concerns via Instagram, clarifying that “no artificial intelligence was used in any of the songs” and that all of Prince’s original recordings remain intact.

To complete ‘Calabama’, the estate followed the artist’s established production style by having a group of musicians who previously worked with Prince—Greg Boyer, Adrian Crutchfield, and Lynn Grissett—overdub a synthesizer track with trombone, saxophone, and trumpet. The estate emphasized that no other songs on the album received posthumous overdubs.
