Scientific research from institutions including Northwestern University, the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging has challenged the assumption that ovaries become dormant after menopause.

By utilizing high-resolution proteomics to analyze tissue from women aged 50 to 75, researchers discovered that the organs undergo significant molecular remodeling rather than becoming inactive. While reproductive functions cease, the ovaries continue to reorganize their metabolism, immune activity, and structure. Studies showed that tissue from women in their 50s exhibited higher levels of proteins linked to gene regulation, whereas tissue from women aged 70 and older showed stronger signatures of innate immunity and lipid metabolism.

Associate Professor Francesca Duncan noted that the ovaries appear to lose their original identity to perform different, active functions. Dr. Michael Stout suggested that the release of pro-inflammatory mediators from the active organ into circulation could potentially link postmenopausal ovarian activity to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease.
