Developments: 3. The 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards Week took place from October 14 to 24, featuring 65 cultural activities across Asturias, including Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés, and Llanes. American singer Patti Smith, honored with the award for the Arts for her “impetuous creativity” and social justice commitment, participated in several major events. Following her arrival in Oviedo, Smith performed a high-energy concert at the Teatro Jovellanos in Gijón on October 20. Accompanied by Tony Shanahan, Seb Rochford, Jackson Smith, and Jesse Paris Smith, the set blended poetry and rock to mark the 50th anniversary of her first performance in Spain. On October 23, the official ceremony was held at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, attended by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía. During her speech, Smith stated that the recognition serves as an incentive to continue evolving as she approaches eighty years of age, adding that the award aims to provide “hope and stability to younger generations.” She highlighted the collective impact of laureates regarding human rights, environmental protection, and intellectual curiosity. She concluded her address with an unplanned a cappella performance of ‘Wing’, a song containing lyrical references to Spain. Princess Leonor also addressed the assembly, speaking on the necessity of optimism and resilience when facing modern social challenges such as political uncertainty and inequality. Other laureates include Kenichi Yoda, president of Studio Ghibli, who received the award for Communication and Humanities. Astronaut Christina Koch received the Concord Prize, speaking on the human capacity for unity and the search for affection. The ceremony also featured historian Timothy Garton Ash and the President of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, who framed the event as an echo of the voices of heroes from the 20th and 21st centuries. ## Claims - Patti Smith received the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts.
