Scientists at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have developed a theoretical model that proposes a more efficient method for achieving nuclear fusion ignition. By updating the long-standing Lawson criterion, researchers identified that the sequence of heating and compressing plasma is critical to energy efficiency.

The new framework suggests that plasma should be heated to the necessary temperature before increasing fuel density, rather than compressing it first. This dynamic approach, which incorporates factors such as heat loss, synchrotron radiation, and impurities, may significantly reduce the external heating energy required to reach a self-sustaining state.

While the model offers a new path for designing future fusion power plants, researchers noted that experimental proof in a real reactor is still necessary and commercial power generation is not imminent.
