Recent incidents in the Campania region involve inmates escaping from correctional facilities after being granted temporary leave or work assignments.

In one instance, 22-year-old Alessio Esposito failed to return to Bellizzi Irpino prison following a special leave for a family event. Carabinieri officers located him hiding in a wardrobe at his mother’s residence in Naples, where he was subsequently transferred to Poggioreale prison.

Separately, 22-year-old Francesco Ahmetovic escaped from the Carinola prison in Caserta after failing to return from an authorized work assignment at a local agricultural colony. While searches for Ahmetovic were launched, the Union of Prison Police Syndicates (USPP) used the incident to criticize the Carinola facility, citing a shortage of approximately 40 agents and calling for increased staffing to improve security.
