CDC Data Centres has proposed a $15 billion data centre campus in Gregadoo, near Wagga Wagga. The project is expected to span 63 hectares with four buildings totaling 189,000 square metres of floor space, potentially requiring up to 1.4 gigawatts of electricity.

Wagga Wagga City Council has characterized the proposal as a “generational economic, investment and workforce opportunity.” However, the project has faced local opposition, including the launch of two petitions within 24 hours of the announcement. Residents have raised concerns regarding noise, water usage, fire risks, and the impact on the electricity grid, with some suggesting the development belongs in an industrial precinct like Bomen rather than a rural area.

CDC CEO Greg Boorer defended the project, citing the site’s access to high-voltage transmission lines and nearby renewable energy initiatives. He described the development as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” and addressed noise concerns by stating the facilities operate quietly, comparing the acoustic impact to that of a library.

In a recent development, Wagga Wagga City Council resolved to proceed with the sale of the land at 232 Ashfords Road to CDC Data Centres. The site was originally acquired in November 2024 for future waste management purposes. As part of the sale, the council has stipulated that CDC Data Centres must provide community benefits valued at a minimum of $150 million over the project's lifespan, with an additional $75 million proposed for local initiatives, totaling $225 million in potential benefits. The council is continuing a master planning process for the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre to ensure long-term waste infrastructure needs are met.

As the project is classified as a State Significant Development, the NSW Government will act as the final decision-maker.
