The reintroduction of Przewalski's horse to the Kazakh steppes has reached a new milestone with the birth of two foals in late August. These births mark the first time the species has been born in this region in approximately 200 years.

The first foal, a male, was born on August 22 to a seven-year-old mare named Tessa. A second male foal was born on August 31 to a mare named Umbra. Both foals are the offspring of the stallion Zorro, who has since passed away. The births took place at the Alibi Wild Ungulates Reintroduction Center within the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve.

Conservationists view these events as evidence of the species' successful adaptation to the local climate and territory. Alyona Krivosheyeva, conservation director of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), stated that the births prove the horses are successfully adapting to the local climate and territory.

This initiative, involving the Prague Zoo and ACBK, aims to restore Equus ferus przewalskii—the world's last truly wild equid species—to its ancestral habitats. The species was previously declared extinct in the wild due to hunting, habitat loss, and competition with domestic livestock, surviving only in captivity with low genetic diversity.
