Sources: 9. Developments: 2. The introduction of large-scale floating LED advertising screens in Bahía de Banderas by the firm Oceanic Marketing has triggered significant controversy in Puerto Vallarta. The company describes the displays as a method for brands to “dominate the horizon,” suggesting they can support tourism and environmental awareness. However, local residents, tourists, and the tourism sector have voiced strong opposition, characterizing the screens as visual pollution that disrupts the natural landscape and the region’s iconic sunsets. Concerns have also been raised regarding maritime navigation safety and potential impacts on local ecosystems. In response to the backlash, Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González and the municipal government have requested intervention from federal authorities, including the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Port Captaincy, and Semarnat. The municipal government is seeking a review of permits, safety certifications, and environmental protections to determine if the company holds the necessary legal authorizations to operate in maritime spaces. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-23: Oceanic Marketing floating ads spark controversy in Puerto Vallarta Oceanic Marketing's floating advertising screens in Puerto Vallarta's Bahía de Banderas have sparked backlash over visual pollution, prompting local authorities to seek federal verification of permits. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/oceanic-marketing-floating-ads-spark-controversy-in-puerto-vallarta ### 2026-09-21: Puerto Vallarta officials seek federal review of floating LED advertising Oceanic Marketing’s new floating LED advertising vessel in Puerto Vallarta has drawn backlash from residents and officials over visual pollution and environmental concerns in Bahía de Banderas. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/puerto-vallarta-officials-oppose-floating-led-advertising --- Cite as: Puerto Vallarta floating LED advertising controversy.
