In the Ternopil region of Ukraine, researchers have extended their search for a mass grave in Puźniki after failing to locate the primary burial site during the most recent phase of work.

While a site discovered in 2023 and exhumed in 2025 revealed the remains of 43 individuals, investigators believe this was not the main location described by historical witnesses. Experts are currently searching an area exceeding one hectare of a former cemetery for a suspected double grave, referred to as M1, which may contain the remains of approximately 40 additional victims murdered in February 1945.

The investigation is a collaborative effort involving the Freedom and Democracy Foundation, Pomeranian Medical University, and Volyn Antiquities, with oversight from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Institute of National Remembrance. Search operations are expected to continue potentially into October 2026.
