Punjab has recorded its first rise in groundwater levels in approximately 30 years. According to assessments by the Central Ground Water Board and statements from Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal, the state’s groundwater development stage declined from 164% in 2022 to approximately 152% in 2026.

This improvement is attributed to water management strategies, specifically the delivery of canal water directly to agricultural fields to reduce reliance on extraction. Annual groundwater extraction decreased from 28.02 BCM in 2022 to 26.32 BCM in 2026. Consequently, the number of over-exploited assessment units dropped from 117 to 110, while safe units increased from 17 to 20.

In a related update, Minister Goyal addressed public concerns regarding the Bhakra Dam, stating the structure is “completely safe.” He clarified that reported tilts or deflections are a standard part of the dam’s design, noting that a deflection of up to 1.03 inches is expected and the structure returns to its original position as water pressure decreases.
