Recent reports from Vietnam have detailed three separate fatalities involving children and rabies.

In Gia Lai Province, a 9-year-old girl died on August 10 after suffering from advanced rabies symptoms, including hydrophobia, aerophobia, photophobia, and panic. The child had sustained a bite to the heel and scratches to the face from a local dog around June 10 but did not receive vaccinations. This marks the third rabies-related death in the province since the start of 2026. Local health authorities are tracing and isolating individuals who had contact with the victim.

In Bình Phước province, a 10-year-old boy passed away on August 8. Investigations indicate the child had frequent contact with an unvaccinated four-month-old dog that the family acquired in March 2026 and which died in late July. While the specific method of transmission remains under investigation, the child exhibited symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to wind and sound.

In Dong Thap province, a 4-year-old girl died on August 22 from the “furious form of rabies.” The child had sustained a 6cm open wound on her forehead on July 4, suspected to be caused by a grey dog. Because the family did not initially report the injury as a bite, the wound was treated as a domestic accident and no vaccines were administered. Although a vaccination center later advised prophylaxis, the family declined treatment due to uncertainty regarding the wound's cause. Following re-hospitalization on August 13 with fever and seizures, medical examinations revealed suspected canine tooth marks and positive saliva tests for the rabies virus.
