The Randstad-ifo HR survey for the third quarter of 2026 examines organizational culture and trust within German companies of varying sizes.

Initial findings indicate that 34% of large companies view their error culture as a barrier to innovation and experimentation, compared to only 11% of small businesses. While large companies are more likely to implement organizational changes following mistakes, they report significantly lower levels of open discussion regarding errors than their smaller counterparts.

Subsequent analysis highlights a disparity in workplace trust. Only 20% of large corporations describe the relationship between staff and executives as open and trusting, whereas 53% of small businesses report similar levels. Across all surveyed companies, 43% describe the relationship as open and trusting, 37% as friendly, 16% as objective, and 4% as distant and hierarchical.

While 68% of all surveyed companies perceive their management culture as familial, team-oriented, and cooperative, experts warn that friendliness does not equate to trust. Verena Menne, Human Resources Director DACH at Randstad, noted that without sufficient trust, employees may hesitate to ask uncomfortable questions, which could cause “critical information to be lost within hierarchical layers.”

Economic pressure was cited by 44% of surveyed companies as a defining factor in employee-manager relations over the past twelve months. Experts, including Norman Gräter, warned that a lack of psychological safety—where employees do not feel comfortable addressing problems or contradicting superiors—poses significant financial and operational risks.
