In mid‑June 2026 the International Criminal Court again refused Serbia’s request to temporarily transfer General Ratko Mladic for medical treatment, stating his health was serious but not acutely worsening. Mladic’s son Darko described his father’s condition as “extremely poor” after a series of brain strokes that have left him largely unable to speak.

A Serbian neuro‑psychiatrist travelled to The Hague on 29 June to assess him; the family noted a slight, temporary improvement but confirmed the general remained immobile and mute. By mid‑July a private neuro‑psychologist affirmed that Mladic’s health was critical and terminal, citing recurring strokes, kidney disease, a cardiac stent, hypertension and diabetes, with a very limited life expectancy.

In early August the family reported doctors estimate only a small chance of surviving the year. The ICC once more denied a temporary release, emphasizing its commitment to keep Mladic in custody until his life sentence is fully served.
