RB Leipzig experienced a period of defensive instability following a 1-4 defeat against Real Madrid. Coach Martin Demichelis noted that the team conceded ten goals across matches against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, citing a lack of defensive intensity as a primary concern.

Following these losses, Demichelis implemented significant rotation, making eight changes to the lineup. This tactical shift coincided with a 4-0 victory against SV Elversberg in the Bundesliga. After a scoreless first half at the Red Bull Arena, Leipzig dominated the second period. Tidiam Gomis opened the scoring in the 48th minute, followed by a goal from Romulo in the 66th minute and a third from Christoph Baumgartner in the 84th minute. Romulo completed a brace in stoppage time to finalize the result, helping the team move up to fifth place in the standings with 12 points.
