Sources: 7. Developments: 2. Real Madrid has navigated internal tensions and tactical adjustments following a derby defeat and a growing points gap in LaLiga. President Florentino Pérez visited the Valdebebas training complex to address squad stability and performance concerns. During this period, midfielder Federico Valverde transitioned from recovering from a grade 3 ankle sprain to facing significant tactical shifts. While Valverde previously stated he was “not born to play as a lateral,” he was deployed as a wing-back by managers including Carlo Ancelotti and José Mourinho. His performance in this role included an assist during a victory against Villarreal. José Mourinho clarified that using Valverde in the defensive line was a “specific solution for a particular situation” rather than a permanent positional change. The shift prompted debate among former players, with Fernando Hierro warning that frequent changes could impact player confidence, while Miguel Torres suggested the versatility demonstrates a coach’s trust in a player’s tactical intelligence. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-18: Federico Valverde faces tactical shifts at Real Madrid Real Madrid's Federico Valverde continues to face tactical shifts into defensive roles, prompting discussions among club veterans regarding player confidence and tactical versatility. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/federico-valverde-faces-tactical-shifts-at-real-madrid ### 2026-10-07: Real Madrid President visits Valdebebas amid club tensions Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez visited Valdebebas to address club tensions, while midfielder Fede Valverde appears close to returning from injury ahead of the Villarreal match. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/real-madrid-president-visits-valdebebas-amid-club-tensions --- Cite as: Real Madrid internal tensions and tactical shifts.
