Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has received renewed recognition for her political leadership and impact on African development. Forbes Africa selected her as one of 15 influential personalities for its 15th-anniversary edition, honoring her role as Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state and her work in advancing women’s leadership.

As she celebrates her 88th birthday, attention has turned to her four-decade career spanning the Liberian Treasury, the United Nations, and the presidency. In recent public addresses, including a keynote at the NALAFEM Summit in Freetown, Sirleaf has emphasized the need for women to move beyond mere representation toward the “meaningful exercise of power guided by a moral compass.” Her recent focus involves transitioning from her own legacy to empowering younger generations to build stable, purposeful institutions.
