The annual red deer rutting season has commenced in the Saint-Hubert region of Belgium. This period, occurring between mid-September and early October, is marked by the bellowing of male deer attempting to attract mates and intimidate rivals.

To protect the animals and ensure their tranquility, local authorities have implemented specific regulations in certain forest sectors. These measures include prohibiting movement within designated perimeters between 5:30 PM and 8:00 AM and suspending mushroom picking. To manage public interest, authorities have established observation zones featuring listening points and professional guided walks.

Near the Grande Fagne area at the Belle-Croix intersection, the mating period is expected to last until mid-October. Manuel Lemaire, a forester from the Malmedy Forestry Office, notes that because female deer are fertile for only a few hours once a year, observers must follow strict guidelines to avoid disrupting the reproductive process. Recommended behaviors include staying on designated paths, avoiding loud noises, refraining from using mobile phones, and not using flashlights. Dogs are prohibited during this time.

Violations of these rules carry financial penalties: leaving paths can result in a 150 euro fine, while disturbances within protected areas can lead to a 250 euro fine. Experts suggest visiting during early morning or twilight hours to hear the deer’s calls while maintaining a respectful distance.
