Reddit is implementing a series of platform changes to combat large-scale scraping and automated abuse by AI bots. The company will discontinue RSS feed support on November 13, 2026, noting the technology has become a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.” While moderators are encouraged to migrate to the Discord Relay Devvit app, there is no direct replacement for users monitoring communities for non-moderation purposes.

Regarding API access, Reddit will stop accepting new requests on October 31, 2026, and will begin removing unregistered apps and users starting January 12, 2027. A full phase-out of public API access is scheduled for March 2027. To assist developers, the company is offering a $1 million pool to provide $1,000 incentives to eligible migrating apps via its new Developer Platform. Following the shutdown, AI services and research tools will likely require commercial licensing agreements to access data.

Access to the “Old Reddit” interface will also be restricted to community moderators and logged-in users who have used the interface within the previous six months. CEO Steve Huffman has announced a strategic shift from an open browsing model to an experience that primarily requires users to be logged in. This move aims to combat unauthorized scraping that occurs through non-logged-in pages, improve advertising data signals, and comply with global age verification laws. This shift follows a reported weekly decline of over 1 million search engine referrals, which Huffman attributed to AI-powered search summaries. Reddit is currently engaged in legal action against several AI companies, including Anthropic and Perplexity AI, regarding data scraping concerns. To implement this login requirement, Reddit plans to begin testing the model in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter of 2026.
