A cardiology study by Rede D’Or, examining 4,921 patients across 59 units between January 2025 and March 2026, found that São Paulo has the lowest average age for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) among the Brazilian states analyzed. The average age in São Paulo was 58, which is lower than the averages reported in Rio de Janeiro (62), Brasília (67), Minas Gerais (67.5), Bahia (69), and Pernambuco (70).

While Rio de Janeiro recorded the highest number of confirmed cases at 764, São Paulo reported 572. Medical experts suggest the younger age profile in São Paulo may be linked to risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and higher pollution levels. Additionally, chronic psychosocial stress was identified as a key independent risk factor that can trigger inflammatory changes and accelerate atherosclerosis.

The findings were presented at the International Cardiology Congress Rede D’Or 2026 in Rio de Janeiro. Cardiologist Mariana Mancilha and other specialists noted that the younger onset in São Paulo may be multifactorial, citing smoking and dyslipidemia alongside psychosocial stress as significant contributors to the accelerated development of atherosclerosis through neuro-hormonal and metabolic changes.
