While used devices are typically sold as-is, refurbished models undergo inspection, cleaning, testing, and necessary repairs or part replacements to ensure functionality. Consumers can find varying levels of protection depending on the provider. Apple-certified refurbished models include new batteries and housings with a one-year warranty, whereas third-party refurbishers may offer shorter warranties and carry risks regarding part originality. Recent developments in the market show an increase in transparency. For example, CertiDeal has implemented a system for iPhone 12 through 16 models that allows buyers to view actual photos of specific units to inspect cosmetic imperfections and exact battery health. Beyond the potential for 20% to 50% cost savings compared to new hardware, purchasing refurbished devices is noted as an ethical method to reduce electronic waste. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: Refurbished smartphone market expands transparency and consumer savings Refurbished smartphone markets are increasing transparency and value, with CertiDeal offering photo-based inspections for iPhones and consumers saving up to 50% on certified pre-owned devices. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/refurbished-smartphone-market-expands-transparency-and-consumer-savings ### 2026-09-16: Refurbished vs. used smartphones: key differences for buyers Consumers choosing between refurbished and used smartphones should consider that refurbished devices undergo testing and repairs, whereas used devices are typically sold as-is with varying warranty levels. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/refurbished-vs-used-smartphones-key-differences-for-buyers --- Cite as: Refurbished smartphone market trends.
