Political activity in Reggio Calabria has centered on the administration of Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro and the upcoming supplementary elections to replace him. During a rally for Fabio Roscioli, Cannizzaro engaged in a verbal confrontation with Roberto Vannacci, leader of Futuro Nazionale, after Vannacci accused the mayor of promising political positions and criticized the local political system for importing outside figures.

Cannizzaro has since prioritized youth engagement as a primary administrative strategy. By assigning political responsibilities to young people, the administration aims to foster community belonging and combat youth emigration, a strategy highlighted by high youth turnout at the inauguration of a new public bridge.

More recently, the administration has addressed regional disruptions caused by truck driver protests against rising fuel and operational costs. While acknowledging the limited capacity of local government to resolve national-scale emergencies, Cannizzaro met with protesters and implemented an eight-day period of free public transport to assist citizens. The Mayor has called upon the national government to address the crisis following announcements regarding resource releases for the transport sector.
