Sources: 22. Developments: 4. Filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have released the documentary ‘Everest: The Other Side’. The film follows elite ski mountaineers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson as they attempt to summit Mount Everest via the North Face and ski down the descent. Beyond the physical feat, the documentary examines the personal tragedies and grief associated with extreme mountaineering. It captures the 2022 death of Hilaree Nelson in an avalanche during a separate Nepalese expedition on Mount Manaslu, as well as Jim Morrison’s personal history of loss following a plane crash that killed his wife and children. While previous works by the directors focused on triumph, this film explores the “darker costs of audacious dreams” and the emotional resilience required for high-risk exploration. The film utilizes IMAX technology to capture the technical complexity of the North Face and serves as a study of risk tolerance and the human cost of pursuing audacious goals. The film is produced by National Geographic Documentary Films, Walt Disney Studios, and Little Monster Films. Following the film's release, Jim Morrison completed a historic mission originally planned with Nelson. After a seven-week expedition that reached the summit in October 2025, Morrison became the first person to ski the North Face of Mount Everest. The descent involved navigating the Super Direct line and performing a 200-metre rappel through the rocky Hornbein Couloir before skiing through the Japanese Couloir to the Rongbuk Glacier. Morrison honored Nelson’s memory by scattering some of her ashes at the summit. ## Claims - The documentary “Everest: The Other Side” follows climbers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson.
