Recent cinematic releases include Maryam Touzani’s ‘Calle Malaga’ and Annemarie Jacir’s ‘Palestina 36’.

‘Calle Malaga’ follows Maria Angeles, an elderly Spanish woman living in Tangier, Morocco, as she struggles to maintain her independence.

Annemarie Jacir’s ‘Palestina 36’ examines the historical roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by focusing on the First Arab Revolt during the British Mandate. The film utilizes archival footage to contrast colonial perspectives with the lived experiences of the population, illustrating how British imperial policies and colonial methods, such as collective punishment, established precedents for future regional tensions.

In presenting the film, Jacir described the project as an effort to reclaim Palestinian memory and combat ‘archival violence.’ Due to the confiscation of the Palestinian National Archive in 1982, the production utilized British Pathé newsreel footage to reconstruct historical moments and lost landscapes. To move beyond a purely documentary aesthetic, the filmmakers employed colorization techniques to bring the archives to life.
