German author Juli Zeh released her new judicial thriller, ‘Pony Show’, on October 14. The novel is described as a work of critical realism that utilizes wit, irony, and sarcasm to explore contemporary social discourses.

The plot follows Bethany Hell, a prominent Hamburg publisher, who faces a criminal investigation after being apprehended at the Austro-Hungarian border. She was found in possession of counterfeit money and a weapon stained with the blood of Fero Lebed, an ambitious intern who disappeared. The story is narrated through the perspective of Betty’s lawyer, Mark, as he navigates the legal proceedings to uncover the truth.

In discussions surrounding the work, Zeh explores themes of gender relations, the publishing industry, and the influence of tabloid media and internet culture. She specifically addresses societal constraints on women’s autonomy, noting a gendered double standard where aging is often viewed as a status-seeking phase for men but reduced to a hormonal issue for women. The narrative also examines how capitalist conventions and the drive for constant self-optimization regarding appearance, education, and wealth impact personal relationships and self-perception.
