Rather than a traditional biography, the film focuses on the human elements of Moulin’s experience, portraying him as a man facing the fear of death. The narrative depicts the period surrounding Moulin’s arrest in Caluire in June 1943 and his subsequent imprisonment at Fort Montluc. A central element of the film is the confrontation between Moulin and Klaus Barbie, the head of the Gestapo in Lyon, including the interrogations and torture Moulin endured. The story concludes with Moulin’s death on July 8, 1944, during deportation to Germany. Gilles Lellouche stars as Jean Moulin, while Lars Eidinger portrays Klaus Barbie. The production is a collaboration involving Pitchipoï Productions and TF1. Following its premiere in the competition program at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, the film officially premiered in theaters on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Since its release, the film has reached the top of the French box office, recording approximately 346,178 admissions. Regarding the production, Gilles Lellouche noted that the role was emotionally taxing, stating it affected him for months due to the intense depiction of psychological and physical torture. Director László Nemes suggested that the cinematic interest in World War II reflects a period of history that France is still processing, particularly regarding the era of totalitarianism and collaboration. The cast also includes Félix Lefebvre as Martin, Moulin’s fellow prisoner, and Louise Bourgoin as the Comtesse de Forez. ## Timeline ### 2026-11-04: László Nemes film Moulin tops French box office László Nemes’s film “Moulin,” starring Gilles Lellouche as Jean Moulin, has claimed the top spot at the French box office. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lszl-nemes-film-moulin-tops-french-box-office ### 2026-10-31: László Nemes film Moulin released in theaters The historical film Moulin, directed by László Nemes and starring Gilles Lellouche as Jean Moulin, premiered in theaters on October 28, 2026. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lszl-nemes-film-moulin-released-in-theaters ### 2026-10-29: László Nemes Jeles releases trailer for new film Moulin Oscar-winner László Nemes Jeles releases the trailer for Moulin, a historical drama about French Resistance figure Jean Moulin, set to premiere at BIFF before a wide release in November. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lszl-nemes-jeles-releases-trailer-for-new-film-moulin ### 2026-10-26: László Nemes film 'Moulin' depicts Jean Moulin’s final days Director László Nemes’ new film 'Moulin' portrays the final days of French Resistance leader Jean Moulin and his confrontation with Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lszl-nemes-film-moulin-depicts-jean-moulins-final-days-1 ### 2026-10-24: László Nemes film Moulin depicts Jean Moulin’s final days Directed by László Nemes, the film ‘Moulin’ portrays Jean Moulin’s arrest in 1943 and his confrontation with Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lszl-nemes-film-moulin-depicts-jean-moulins-final-days --- Cite as: Release and box office performance of László Nemes film ‘Mou.
