The Disney+ series ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’, created by Malcolm Spellman, is a spinoff of the television universe established by the late John Singleton in ‘Snowfall’. Set in 1990s Los Angeles, the narrative moves away from the 1980s crack epidemic to explore the emergence of West Coast hip-hop and the evolution of the music industry in South Central and Compton.

The plot follows characters such as Wanda Bell, a former addict turned talent scout, and her cousin Lamar, a teenage producer, as they navigate social and economic tensions. The series examines how the music industry mirrors the predatory hierarchies of the drug trade. Creative teams have emphasized a focus on character-driven narratives to portray the complexities of the era, with Spellman stating the series prioritizes the ‘human element’. Creative consultant Glasses Malone noted the production seeks to move beyond common Hollywood tropes to depict mutual respect and friendships that spanned neighborhood lines.

Cast members have provided further insight into the character dynamics. Gail Bean, who portrays Wanda Bell, described the character as someone who has transformed a history of addiction and survival into ambition, noting that while Wanda is fearless, she is also “fearless but tired.” Actors Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie ‘Buddy’ Sims III have also discussed their roles. Smith, playing James, described a struggle to escape ‘survival mode’ to find identity, while Blackk’s character, Lamar, pursues music while questioning environmental rules. Sims plays Artillery, a character defined by passion and creation.

The series is available on FX and streams on Hulu.
