The dark fantasy romantic comedy ‘Wicker’, directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, is scheduled for a multi-country theatrical release in late 2026. Starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, the film follows an ostracized fisherwoman who commissions a basket weaver, played by Peter Dinklage, to create a husband out of wicker. Skarsgård’s character was brought to life using practical effects by Wētā Workshop, involving an 18-month development of a 50-piece interlocking costume. Based on the short story ‘The Wicker Husband’ by Ursula Wills-Jones, the film explores a romance that causes scandal within a village. Ahead of its release, the film held its European premiere at the 22nd Zurich Film Festival, where Colman debuted a long, natural grey hairstyle. Following a premiere at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles, the film has generated significant social media interest. To enhance the viewing experience, Black Bear announced a special 4DX screening for October 28, featuring synchronized motion seats and environmental effects like wind, water, and scents. Skarsgård has noted that his role was a departure from previous work, aiming to portray a sincere character with depth rather than a ‘flat, decorative figure.’ The production utilized prosthetics sculpted from Skarsgård’s own features to ensure the wicker suit avoided a ‘horror-like appearance.’ As the film approaches its release, it has received critical acclaim, including a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have described the project as a satirical take on social media, AI, and traditional gender roles. The film’s release schedule includes a limited US theatrical release on October 23, 2026, followed by a nationwide expansion on October 30. In India and the United Kingdom, the film will be released on October 30, 2026, with an Australian release expected on November 5, 2026. ## Claims - The film “Wicker” is an adaptation of Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story “The Wicker Husband”.
