Officials in Republika Srpska have initiated efforts to commemorate and publicize the historical suffering of the Serbian people during the conflicts of the 1990s.

In East Sarajevo, leaders observed a day of remembrance for victims of NATO airstrikes from 1994 and 1995. President Milorad Dodik characterized the bombings as a “crime without precedent,” while other officials noted the long-term health consequences of depleted uranium ammunition used during those operations.

Expanding this focus internationally, the Memorial Center of Republika Srpska launched a digital campaign in Rome titled ‘Learn About Serbian Suffering’. Running from September 7 to 13, the initiative utilizes large LED screens in prominent locations such as Piazza della Repubblica, Via Nazionale, Castel Sant’Angelo, and near the Vatican to educate the European public on civilian persecution and wartime experiences.

The campaign features more than 1,500 collected audio-visual testimonies, archival documents, and historical facts. Director Denis Bojić stated the goal is to ensure the Serbian voice is heard internationally and to prevent “political pressures from replacing historical truth.” Italian researcher Lorenzo Bernasconi of the Machiavelli Foundation noted that the history of the wars in the former Yugoslavia remains “insufficiently known” to the Italian public despite the geographic proximity of the Balkans.
