International research teams have made progress in identifying the mechanisms behind high-temperature superconductivity in copper-oxide ceramics, or cuprates.

Physicists at the University of Bristol, working with an international team, identified electron spin fluctuations as the primary driver in electron-doped cuprates, specifically lanthanum cerium copper oxide. By studying specialized thin-film samples, researchers observed a “highly anisotropic inelastic component” to electron scattering, suggesting that low-energy spin fluctuations act as the pairing glue for electrons.

Complementary research from Canada’s National Institute of Scientific Research (INRS) adds further complexity to the field. Their findings suggest a competition between quantum states, indicating that a phenomenon known as a pseudogap may compete for control of a material’s electrons rather than facilitating superconductivity. Together, these studies aim to provide the insights necessary to design superconductors that function without extreme cooling requirements.
