Research into child development has focused on the foundational roles of innate health and parental interaction. Early indicators of stability include birth weight and respiratory strength, while the period between ages 0 and 12 is identified as a critical window for brain plasticity. During this time, experts warn that negative verbal reinforcement can create lasting psychological patterns.

Subsequent studies have expanded this scope to include the bidirectional relationship between parental behavior and child aggression, noting the influence of shared genetic factors. Modern research also examines how parental stress—driven by financial and social pressures—impacts parenting consistency and the use of digital screens to manage behavior.

Recent findings have added nuance to these dynamics. A long-term Spanish study (INMA) suggests the impact of pets on mental health is complex; while initial data showed children without pets had better mental health indicators, this difference disappeared when adjusting for socioeconomic status and age. Notably, living with cats at ages four or five was linked to slightly more frequent mental health issues, though causality remains unproven.

Regarding technology, research indicates that parental stress is a key driver in children’s screen time usage, as stressed parents are more likely to use devices to manage behavior and maintain less strict digital rules. Furthermore, studies have linked excessive screen exposure at specific ages—around one and six years old—to poorer school performance and weaker working memory.

Finally, communication and social development remain central. Experts recommend using open-ended questions rather than broad inquiries like “How was school?” to foster dialogue. Additionally, research suggests birth order may influence personality, with middle children often scoring higher in traits such as agreeableness, honesty, and modesty.
