A meta-analysis published in the journal ‘Sleep and Biological Rhythms’ by researchers from Harbin University of Sport has identified high-intensity yoga as the most effective physical activity for improving sleep quality in individuals with sleep disorders. The study analyzed 30 randomized controlled trials involving over 2,500 participants across more than a dozen countries.

Unlike traditional slow-paced yoga, this high-intensity version utilizes rapid transitions between poses and body weight to create continuous muscular resistance. This method is believed to stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. The research suggests an ideal prescription of two 30-minute sessions per week for eight to ten weeks. This finding contrasts with other reviews that suggest three sessions of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week might be more effective. Following yoga, walking and strength training, such as weightlifting or Pilates, were noted as the next most effective activities.

The research also emphasizes the broader health implications of sleep quality, particularly regarding metabolic regulation and mental well-being. For individuals with diabetes, poor sleep can disrupt hormone regulation—including insulin and cortisol—leading to increased insulin resistance. To support better rest, experts recommend sleep hygiene practices such as maintaining consistent schedules, optimizing sleep environments (cool, dark, and quiet), and avoiding evening caffeine or screen exposure to support natural melatonin production.
