Researchers from various institutions, including MIT, have investigated methods to enhance the brain’s ability to clear metabolic waste during sleep.

One study published in Science Translational Medicine indicates that precisely timed, 50-millisecond bursts of ‘pink noise’ during non-REM sleep can amplify slow brain waves. This amplification intensifies the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which assists the glymphatic system in flushing out toxins such as lactic acid and proteins like amyloid and tau—substances linked to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Lead researcher Laura Lewis noted that the timing of the stimulus is critical, comparing the process to ‘pushing a child on a swing at the exact right moment to increase height.’ While the research does not claim to cure Alzheimer’s disease, the team aims to transition this technology from healthy adult trials to clinical populations to explore its therapeutic potential.

Additionally, research published in Science Advances utilized artificial intelligence to measure fluid movement velocity within the brain. This AI-driven approach revealed a ‘two-speed cleanup system’ where fluid moves significantly faster through open spaces than through deeper tissue, where flow slows by approximately 50 times. This technology offers a way to observe slow circulation velocities that traditional MRI often fails to capture.
