Researchers from INRAE and the Université Clermont Auvergne have provided experimental evidence that trees possess proprioception, which is the ability to perceive and correct their own body posture. 

A study published in New Phytologist indicates that tree trunks do not solely respond to external stimuli like light or gravity, but also to their own curvature. To adjust their orientation, trees utilize a mechanism involving tension wood. This reaction wood forms on one side of the stem, creating internal forces similar to muscles to modify the plant’s direction. In experimental observations, horizontal stems were seen curving upward to regain a vertical orientation through this internal feedback loop, a process specifically noted in young hybrid poplar trees.
