The Resident Evil franchise is experiencing a resurgence across video games and cinema. Capcom is expanding the brand with the game Townfall, which utilizes updated graphics and mechanics. In film, a new adaptation directed by Zach Cregger and produced by Sony Pictures is moving toward an auteur horror-comedy style, using survival horror as a metaphor for millennial unpreparedness.

Discussions surrounding the franchise also include thematic comparisons to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, noting parallels in narratives involving corporate or political failures and the concealment of crises. Additionally, the franchise has faced long-term challenges in translating the survival horror essence of the games to film, with previous adaptations struggling to balance original character development with visual fidelity to game locations.
