In early July 2026 the Allgäu retailer Feneberg entered self‑administration, prompting REWE Group and the investor consortium LEH‑Allgäu GmbH to propose a takeover of most of its 72 stores. The plan, announced on 7 July, was described by REWE chairman Peter Maly as giving “people on the ground, employees and the whole region a reliable perspective.” It aimed to preserve roughly 3,000 jobs, keep the Feneberg and VonHier brands and maintain the regional “Von hier” programme for local producers.

On 10 July the creditors’ committee approved the deal, confirming a split of about 35 stores to REWE and 37 to LEH‑Allgäu. The acquisition outbid a competing offer from Edeka and still required clearance from the German competition authority and final sign‑off by the creditors’ assembly.

A background note released on 3 August described Feneberg’s origins in 1947, its peak of around 80 outlets and €550 million annual sales, and the heavy pension liabilities (≈ €70 million) that helped trigger insolvency. The transition to REWE as wholesale supplier began in early August, with the first stores switching supply chains, cash‑register and ordering systems, and phasing out the Payback loyalty programme and Edeka’s “Gut & Günstig” range. Customers were warned to redeem existing vouchers before they become invalid. The Federal Cartel Office continues to review the market impact of the transfer.

The acquisition forms part of REWE’s broader strategy to expand its European footprint and modernise logistics, IT and stores across Central and Eastern Europe.
