Sources: 4. Developments: 2. Professional wrestler Rey Mysterio has recently reflected on his career history, specifically regarding his unmasking in WCW. Kevin Nash stated on the ‘Kliq This’ podcast that he was responsible for booking the decision to have Mysterio lose his mask at WCW SuperBrawl IX in 1999. Nash explained that the decision was driven by advertising and merchandising needs, claiming that ‘the mask doesn't make Rey Mysterio, the mask makes Rey Mysterio money.’ He noted that showing Mysterio’s face would allow for broader commercial appeal in locations such as Times Square. While Nash believed Mysterio’s appeal was not dependent on the mask, Mysterio has previously expressed disagreement with the move, suggesting the unmasking was negative for him and other luchadores. Additionally, Mysterio has discussed his professional relationship with Batista, noting his enjoyment of working with him as both a partner and rival. Separately, WWE RAW star Dragon Lee shared social media photos from a gym showing a rare glimpse of Mysterio without his mask. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: Kevin Nash claims responsibility for Rey Mysterio’s WCW unmasking Kevin Nash claims he orchestrated Rey Mysterio’s unmasking in WCW to boost marketability, while recent photos of the unmasked wrestler have surfaced via WWE’s Dragon Lee. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kevin-nash-claims-responsibility-for-rey-mysterios-wcw-unmasking ### 2026-09-26: Rey Mysterio reflects on WCW unmasking and career history Rey Mysterio reflects on his career, including Kevin Nash’s role in his 1999 WCW unmasking and his past wrestling matches and partnership with Batista. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/rey-mysterio-reflects-on-wcw-unmasking-and-career-history --- Cite as: Rey Mysterio career reflections and WCW unmasking.
