A fresh investigation by the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate has been launched into allegations of a conspiracy regarding the hurried cremation of a doctor murdered at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. The victim’s father alleged that political influence was used to bypass family consent and cremation protocols to prevent a second autopsy and destroy evidence.

In mid-August, West Bengal police arrested former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh in Odisha and Sanjeev Mukherjee in Kolkata. By early September, authorities arrested Somnath Dey, the former chief of Panihati Municipality, in Bengaluru. Dey was the third principal accused in the case and had been absconding since the investigation began. Ghosh and Mukherjee remain in judicial custody.
