Rheinland-Pfalz Ministerpräsident Gordon Schnieder has requested federal financial support for flood protection measures. This demand follows a decision by Chancellor Friedrich Merz to deny the use of reconstruction funds for the construction of planned flood retention basins in the Ahrtal region. 

The federal government maintains that existing funds are designated for repairing infrastructure and addressing past damages rather than financing new construction projects. In response, local officials from the Ahrweiler, Vulkaneifel, and Euskirchen districts have issued a joint funding request, while the administration in Ahrweiler is evaluating further actions following the federal refusal.
