The footage, recorded by Officer Brian Torrez, depicts the immediate aftermath of the incident where a six-year-old student shot his first-grade teacher, Abigail Zwerner. The video shows a reading specialist, Amy Kovac, restraining the child as police arrive. During the encounter, the boy reportedly used profanities, issued verbal threats, and admitted to taking a 9mm Taurus handgun from his mother. One report notes that school officials had received warnings regarding a threat involving the boy earlier on the day of the shooting. Abigail Zwerner sustained serious injuries, including a punctured lung and broken bones. She later secured a $10 million civil judgment in a gross negligence lawsuit after a jury determined a former school administrator had ignored warnings that the child might possess a weapon. The child’s mother, Deja Taylor, was previously sentenced to prison for felony child neglect and firearm-related charges. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-10: Virginia school shooting bodycam footage released Released bodycam footage shows the aftermath of a 2023 shooting at a Virginia elementary school where a six-year-old shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/virginia-school-shooting-bodycam-footage-released-1 ### 2026-10-07: Richneck Elementary School shooting bodycam footage unsealed Newly unsealed body-camera footage shows the aftermath of a 2023 shooting at Richneck Elementary School, where a 6-year-old boy shot his teacher and verbally threatened responding officers. 18 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/newport-news-police-release-bodycam-footage-of-2023-elementary-school-shooting --- Cite as: Richneck Elementary School shooting investigation.
